(Binghamton, NY • June 12, 2017) On June 6, while sporting brightly colored socks representing the many different forms of cancer, members of the New York State Senate and Assembly declared June 6 Sock Out Cancer Day™ in New York State. The proclamation builds upon National Cancer Survivors Day®, which is observed each year on the first Sunday in June.

“We are honored and thankful to the New York State Assembly and Senate for declaring June 6 Sock Out Cancer Day in New York State,” said Security Mutual Life Chairman, President and CEO Bruce W. Boyea. “In conjunction with National Cancer Survivors Day™, this is another opportunity for us to increase awareness of the various forms of cancer. We thank Senator Fred Akshar and Assemblywoman Donna Lupardo for making this day happen by advancing the concept at the state level.”

Akshar and Lupardo also issued a challenge to other state legislatures across the country to sponsor Sock Out Cancer™ initiatives in their home states.

Security Mutual Life Chairman, President and CEO Bruce W. Boyea seconded that challenge. “There are so many people needing assistance,” he said. “We would love to see the Sock Out Cancer™ programs initiated here in New York State become a model for communities across the United States as we all work to lend a hand to cancer victims and their families,” Boyea said.

Sock Out Cancer™ is a nonprofit program that helps support individuals with cancer who also need assistance paying for basic living expenses, such as rent or mortgage payments, food, and transportation to the hospital. Communities can launch a Sock Out Cancer program in their respective areas, and the program then works with each community’s existing charitable organizations to help support cancer patients and their families in their time of financial need.

Sock Out Cancer™ was founded earlier this year in Binghamton, New York, by Security Mutual Life Insurance Company of New York with support from many local individuals and businesses, including Chemung Canal Trust CompanyVisions Federal Credit UnionWBNGHinman, Howard & Kattell, LLP, and Upstate Shredding, LLC.
